When food producers focus on using fresh ingredients, sustainable packaging, and innovative, eco-friendly technologies, they’re laying down the framework necessary for a promising product.
But the true test of a ready meal’s success lies in its ability to delight both the eye and the taste buds. Without an initial visual, aesthetic appeal in terms of color and appearance, the product might not even make it off the shelves.
And if the food doesn’t taste great once it makes it to the table, even the most sustainably packaged and technologically advanced product will not convince consumers to make a repeat purchase.
Recent research has deepened our understanding of how consumers perceive ready meals, particularly in relation to their sensory expectations and overall satisfaction. A study detailed in the report on consumer perception when they are considering a ready-meal purchase reveals significant insights into consumer behavior.

The research highlights that the sensory quality of a product significantly influences consumer satisfaction. When participants knew a meal was ready-to-eat, their initial expectations were generally lower compared to meals perceived as homemade. However, when these ready-to-eat meals delivered high sensory quality, they effectively met or even exceeded expectations, leading to increased consumer satisfaction and repeat purchase intentions.
This study highlights the importance for food producers to focus not just on the nutritional and convenience aspects of their products, but also on the sensory experience they deliver.
Conny Swahn, CEO of Kale Foods, captures this idea perfectly: “If you have a product that tastes good, you will have people buy it again. I think that needs to be the driver in having a demand for it. And then if we can combine that with a technique that prolongs the shelf life, then we have a good start.”
As a provider of chilled ready meal technology, we’ve long understood the importance of overall sensory satisfaction for the market presence of our customers’ products.
We had an independent study carried out by Kantar which confirmed how the “look” of the product was the first trigger to making a purchase.

Of course there is a degree of responsibility on the producer in having ready meal recipes that taste great. But in terms of color, appearance, nutritional value and texture – the onus sways more towards the technology provider.
This is a responsibility we’re very aware of as it has determined our strategic narrative since the company was formed. Today, our innovative in-pack cooking and pasteurization process not only ensures the safety and longevity of ready meals but also preserves their taste, texture, and nutritional value. This approach supports producers in their mission to create products that customers love and continue to choose.
